Bonds of state officials, 1809-1984.

Entries on each bond for elective and appointive offices includes: names of official and guarantors; date; bond amount; office title; Governor's signature; and filing date with Secretary of State. Oath of office usually is included (ca. 1850-) and certificate of power of attorney accompanies bond (ca. 1917-) . Prior to 1917 bonds were issued to private individuals and companies (e.g., Indian traders (1809-1818); Springfield citizens relocating state capital (1837); employment agencies (1901-1903)).

The Office of Secretary of State, successor to the territorial Secretary, was established by the 1818 Constitution to keep both the state archives and a register of the Governor's official acts.
